Over the past decade, major smartphone manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung have been coming up with exciting smartphone models and offering many options to consumers.
Steve Jobs unveiled the first-ever iPhone in January 2007. Subsequently, Samsung came up with its first smartphone in April 2009. Since then, it has been intense competition between these two global brands.
The year 2020 was an exception due to the pandemic, as the market was sluggish. The situation improved in 2021 when Apple and Samsung launched some fascinating smartphones such as iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini, Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3.
In 2022, we can expect to see the momentum of smartphone launches continue. According to a report by Trend Force, the estimated production of smartphones is likely to reach the pre-pandemic level in 2022 with a year-over-year increase of 3.8 per cent. The report further forecasts that smartphone manufacturers will produce nearly 1.39 billion units this year.
In this post, we will take a look at the potential smartphone launch plans by Apple and Samsung in 2022.
Apple revamped its budget iPhone worth $400 in 2020 after a gap of four years. Now, the company is coming up with the third-generation model iPhone SE 3 in 2022. Apple might launch SE 3 in the first half of 2022.
We can expect that the SE model will support 5G and perform better with the addition the A15 Bionic chip, the same processor that comes with the iPhone 13.
The existing iPhone SE runs on the older A13 Bionic processor used in the iPhone 11. Those second-generation iPhone SEs stood out for their affordability, quality performance, and portability.
The third-generation iPhone SE could be the first model to get Face ID. The earlier 2016 and 2020 iPhone SE versions had a Touch ID and a physical home button.
According to the reports circulated so far, it seems Apple has a plan to add more value to the iPhone SE model by introducing a few more modern features while hopefully retaining their qualities.
Although the iPhone 13 was launched not too long ago, that will not stop Apple from unveiling the iPhone 14 Max. We expect to see some of the major upgrades in this flagship iPhone in terms of camera quality, screen size options and design. Experts say that the iPhone 14 Max is going to be a supersize version of Apple's next-gen iPhones.
Apple will probably do away with the iPhone Mini and bring in another 6.7-inch model soon. It means the lineup of iPhone 14 Max may comprise the iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7-inch), along with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro (6.1-inch) models.
Apple is likely to target consumers with the iPhone 14 Max who look for a larger screen but are not really concerned about the other upgrades, such as a lidar sensor and triple-lens camera. It could be a perfect smartphone for loyal iPhone fans who have been waiting eagerly for a huge display but do not want to shell out $1,099 for iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Both the Pro and Pro Max versions of iPhones in 2022 may come with a 48-megapixel wide rear camera, which is a significant improvement from the 12-megapixel camera of the iPhone 13 Pro.
When it comes to the design of iPhones in 2022, Apple might move away from one of the iPhone's major physical features: the notch. The iPhone 14 phones may have a hole cut-out on the front camera, but we can find that only on iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. The iPhone 14 Max models are likely to launch on April 21, 2022.
After releasing Galaxy S20 FE and Galaxy FE 5G in 2021, Samsung has come up with their successor Galaxy S21 FE, which was launched on January 11, 2022. The earlier two models had a quality AMOLED display and decent camera performance. Especially, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor of Galaxy S20 FE 5G proved to be good for its all-round performance. So, we can expect the Galaxy S21 FE will take the brand’s performance a step ahead.
The leaked information about the phone shows that the device has a resemblance with the Galaxy S21 series for its design. It also may have taken inspiration from the camera module of Galaxy A52 5G, with a similar back panel finishing. The phone comes with a 6.4” screen size, 8GB RAM, 128 GB internal memory, triple rear camera (12MP+12MP+8MP) & 32MP front camera, and 4500 mAh battery.
In 2021, Samsung came with Galaxy S21 Ultra its larger screen and S-Pen support, which seemed an ideal alternative to Galaxy Note. However, the overall performance of the S21 Ultra fell short, including the S-Pen experience. The phone does not have an S-Pen in the box and has no built-in slot in the phone for storing it. Also, the phone lacked the S-Pen and Bluetooth gesture support.
Now, with the scheduled launch of Galaxy S22 Ultra on February 9, 2022, Samsung can address those concerns. Rumours suggest that the Galaxy S22 Ultra may have S-Pen storage, which will make it easier to track Samsung's stylus. An integrated slot could also mean that the S-Pen might be in the box with the S22 instead of selling it separately as an accessory.
Galaxy S22 Ultra will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, 12GB RAM, 108MP + 12MP + 10MP rear camera, 40MP front camera, 6.80” display, 1 TB storage and 5000 mAh battery capacity. All these upgrades in the Galaxy S22 Ultra are likely to make the device even more attractive for Galaxy Note fans, or people who are simply looking for a powerful camera phone.
Previously by launching Galaxy Z Fold 3, Samsung brought something unique into the smartphone market. However, the phone is quite expensive than most average phones, and also unconventional design of the Z Fold 3 feels a bit awkward to use as a regular smartphone.
Considering the progress of Samsung in the foldable phone segment, we can expect a better version in the form of Galaxy Z Fold 4 sans the shortcomings of the earlier model. Samsung is going to launch the 4th generation Galaxy Z phone on April 20, 2022.
Samsung has already confirmed that in 2020, the company sold the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 phones four times more than the previous foldable phones. It indicates that the demand for the Z Fold 4 is likely to be high, giving Samsung high hopes.
When it comes to specifications, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus, 12 GB RAM, 12MP + 12MP + 12MP triple rear camera, 256GB internal memory, 7.6” display, and 4500 battery capacity. Also, more software features will put the larger screen of Z Fold to better use, and the new design will make the device less cumbersome when folded.
