Mac vs. PC: Which one is Better for You?

What is the Main Difference between a Mac and a PC?

We start with the burning question on the fundamental difference between a Mac and a PC. In recent years, the differences in hardware between the two have reduced significantly when Apple moved from PowerPC to Intel processors in the mid-2000s.

Now, most PCs and all Macs run on Intel processors, come with around 8GB of memory, 256GB storage, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth support, a built-in webcam, and integrated graphics. Despite these similarities, the differences are still there.

Apple has transitioned to have one type of port for its laptops, which is Thunderbolt 3. It means you need an adapter or a special cable to connect your laptop to a TV, your camera’s memory card, or other accessories.

Many PCs still come with dedicated ports, including a USB-A port, SD Card Slot, and HDMI port, for which you need not use an adapter for common tasks.

The main difference between the hardware of Mac and PC is the options you will get. Most PCs that run Windows come from third-party providers, where tech specs can vary drastically.

So, if you want a computer with specific configurations, such as high memory, touch screen, several ports, excellent speakers, average webcam, a PC desktop or laptop could be ideal.

On the other hand, Macs have strict guidelines when it comes to building quality, design, performance, and security. Here, your options will be limited to three machines with the potential of moderate customization.

Mac vs. PC Based on Features and Performance

Form Factor

An important factor when considering a Mac or PC is the form factor. Unlike the currently available Macs, PCs provide you the option to choose the screen size of your device, resolution, touch screen capabilities, thinness, port types, and color. This way, you can pick a PC that will fit your specific requirements.

For example, if you wish to buy a device with the touch screen feature and with a 2-in-1 laptop combination, you can pick a PC that has these features. However, to get the same features from Macs, you may have to buy each device separately—a laptop, a stylus, and a tablet.

Nothing is more frustrating when your device is not configured for the level of performance you want. A device with lags can make a lot of difference between completing your work on time and getting behind your schedule. Having a PC with Intel® processors can give you better peace of mind as you can customize it get a range of options that can help with your workloads.

Both Macs and PCs run on Intel processors now and are designed to match the fast-paced lifestyle of consumers. PCs with high-speed Intel® Evo™ can be a great choice. These devices come with 11th Gen Intel® Core™ processors and Intel® Iris® Xᵉ Graphics for excellent performance and amazing graphics.

On the other hand, the processor configuration of Macs ranges from 8-core to 28-core Intel Xeon W processor and the memory configuration can go up to 1.5TB of DDR4 ECC, ensuring superfast performance.

PCs support more external devices with a variety of form factors, and this is why PCs are a better option for gamers for downloading or running games. Whether you are a casual or hardcore gamer, most console and online games are compatible with PCs.

If you want to play heavy games such as PUBG, Red Dead Redemption II, or Apex Legends, Macs will not support them. It means you can play these games only on PCs. Macs have a very limited range of Steam games, and recent Mac OS does not support hundreds of popular Steam games, leaving Mac users disappointed.

Device security is an extremely crucial factor. This is why you need to look for a device with additional layers of security, a strong defense against malware, and resilience to ward off sophisticated viruses and cyberattacks.

The 2020 State of Malware Report by Malwarebytes shows that the number of security threats for Macs in 2019 was almost double compared to Windows. Besides, the prevalence of threats on Macs was over 400 percent over the previous year.

So, if you are concerned about keeping your data secure, a PC is a better bet. On top of it, Windows 10, with its built-in Windows Security provides can safeguard your device from viruses.

Content Creation

If you need to create content regularly for your work, PCs can support a diverse range of applications, which are compatible with most plug-ins that you might use. Whether you are a designer, musician, or video editor, a PC will enable you to use all the applications and plug-ins you need.

Starting from music apps such as Serato, Ableton, and Avid Pro Tools, to workstation apps, including VMware Fusion, Barracuda VPN, and Box Drive, you can use them all without any hiccups.

Last but not least is pricing. Prices between Macs and PCs vary widely. Macs are way too pricy with nearly similar specifications as PCs. It is a fact that you can get a Windows PC for a much lower price than a Mac. Even the minimum price of a Mac is $500 for Mac Mini, whereas you can get a Windows PC for below $300 that will be perfect for basic tasks

A study by Forrester, however, reveals that eventually Macs turn out to be cheaper than PCs over their lifetime. The initial purchase price may be higher for Macs than PCs, but after paying for software, security, and support, they begin to feel like a good bargain.

What is the Verdict: Mac or PC Better?

The differences between Macs and PCs have been reduced to a large extent. Still, users can feel the difference in performance on both platforms to accomplish similar tasks such as writing, creating slideshows, image or video editing, and streaming videos without any hitches.

If you are okay with fewer hardware options, Apple Macs are ideal. If you would want more hardware choices and want a device that is more compatible with various gaming, getting a PC is a better option.
